Getting help to understand something is learning. Presenting somebody else's work, including a machine's, as your own is not. Everything else on this page is that one sentence applied to specific situations. It is worth being clear about why this matters beyond getting caught: the reason your course asks you to show a method is that producing the method is the skill being taught. A finished answer with no method behind it earns almost nothing, and more importantly, it leaves you unable to do the next problem when the tool is not there.

Three questions that settle almost every case

When you are not sure, you usually do not need a policy document. You need three quick questions. Ask them in order, and stop at the first no. This works because it tests the three things institutions actually care about: permission, understanding, and independence. If any answer is no, switch to a hint, a different practice problem, or a conversation with your instructor.

How to disclose help, and how to check yourself

Many courses now allow AI help as long as you say you used it. Disclosure is easy and it protects you: one line saying which tool you used, for which part, and what you did with the output. Something like "I used an AI solver to check my factoring in question 4 and to explain the domain restriction; the working is mine" is enough for most instructors. Then run the honest self-test. Close everything, change a number in the problem, and solve it from a blank page. If you can do that, you learned the method and the help did its job. If you cannot, go back to the guide for that topic and work through it properly before the test arrives, when the tool will not be there.

A disclosure line that works

Keep it factual and specific. Vagueness looks worse than the help itself.

The three-question test

Before you open any tool, ask three things and stop at the first no. Is this resource permitted for this specific piece of work, right now? Will I understand and be able to check what it gives me? Could I solve a similar problem after I close it? If any answer is no, switch to a single hint, a different practice problem, or a question for your instructor. Being able to open a tool has never been the same thing as being allowed to use it.

Is using an AI math solver cheating?

It depends entirely on what you do with it and what your course allows. Using it to understand a method, get a hint, or check work you already did is normal studying. Copying its solution onto a graded assignment as your own is not, and using it during a proctored exam is cheating everywhere. The tool is not the problem; the substitution of its work for yours is.

My teacher never mentioned AI. Does that mean it is allowed?

No. Silence is not permission, and "nobody said I could not" has never worked well as a defence. Ask directly, in writing if you can, and be specific about what you want to use it for. Most instructors answer in a sentence, and then you know.

Do I have to say I used AI?

If your course, instructor, or publisher requires disclosure, yes, and the requirement is usually in the syllabus. Even when it is not required, one honest line costs nothing and removes any question later. Say which tool, which part, and what you did with the output.

How do I know whether I actually learned it?

Close everything, change one number in the problem, and solve it from a blank page. That single test is more reliable than any feeling of understanding you get while reading a solution. If you cannot do it, work the practice set for that skill until you can.
