Start with the right tool
A lot of frustration comes from asking the wrong part of the site for help. The tools split cleanly by what you need. If you need a number, use a calculator; they run in your browser, need no account, and cannot be wrong about arithmetic. If you need to understand a method, use the tutor. If you just need a formula, look it up rather than asking for it. Getting this right usually turns a ten-minute struggle into a one-minute answer.
Which one you want
Match the job to the tool and most problems disappear before they start.
- You need a number from an expression: the scientific calculator or the four-function calculator.
- You need to see the shape of something: the graphing calculator or the 3D viewer.
- You need a method explained step by step: the AI math solver.
- Your problem is on paper: the photo solver.
- You just need the formula: the formula library.
- You need to get better at a skill: the practice library.
- You are not sure what the topic is even called: the search page.
Type the problem so it is understood the first time
The tutor answers the question you actually asked, which is not always the question you meant. Most bad answers trace back to a missing piece of the problem rather than to the math. Give it everything: the full expression, what you are solving for, the units, any interval or restriction, and the form the answer needs to be in. If your class requires a particular method, say so, because there is usually more than one valid route and you will be marked on the one you were taught.
Put these in every problem
Six lines at most, and it changes the quality of the answer completely.
- The complete expression or equation, with all its brackets.
- What you are solving for, named clearly.
- Units, if there are any.
- Any interval, domain, or restriction that applies.
- Whether you want an exact answer or a decimal, and to how many places.
- The method your class uses, if it matters.
Things people mistype
These five account for most of the confusion in typed problems.
- Fractions: write
(x+1)/(x-3), becausex+1/x-3means something completely different. - Powers: write
x^2, and bracket the whole exponent when it is more than one character, as inx^(2n). - Roots: write
sqrt(x+4)so it is clear how much sits under the root. - Minus signs: a negative number in an exponent or a denominator usually needs its own brackets.
- Trig: say whether the angle is in degrees or radians. This is the single most common source of a wrong trig answer.
Taking a photo that reads cleanly
The photo solver is good at printed math and less reliable with handwriting, which is a limitation of reading, not of reasoning. You can do a lot to help it. Crop to the single problem, get even light with no shadow from your hand, and hold the camera square to the page rather than at an angle. Then always read the transcription back before you look at the answer, because a 5 read as an S produces a perfectly confident solution to a problem you did not ask. If a diagram carries the important labels, type those out instead of trusting the picture.
Photo limits and rules
These are enforced by the server, so an image outside them gets an error rather than an answer.
- PNG, JPG, WEBP, or GIF only. A PDF or a HEIC photo will be rejected.
- Under 8 MB, and under 25 megapixels.
- One problem per photo, cropped close.
- Crop out names, class details, and anything private before you send it. The privacy policy explains where the image goes.
- If it will not upload, screenshot the problem and upload the screenshot instead.
When something goes wrong
Every error message on this site is written to tell you what to do next, and each one has one likely cause. Find your message in the table and try the fix in the last column before doing anything else. If a math answer looks wrong rather than an error appearing, do not start editing your last line: go back to the original problem and check the transcription, the brackets, the angle mode, and the units. The first step that differs from what you expected is almost always the real problem, and it is usually two steps earlier than where you noticed.

Checking an answer in about a minute
This routine catches most errors, whether they came from you, a calculator, or the tutor. Substitute the answer into the first line of the original problem, not into your last simplified line, because a mistake made in step two survives and still looks consistent all the way down. Then look at the sign and the size: a discount cannot be bigger than the price and a length cannot be negative. Graph it if you can. Then ask for a second method and see whether the two agree. If they do not, the disagreement tells you exactly where to look. When something is still wrong after all that, the contact page explains what to include so it can be fixed quickly.
The four checks
In this order, because each one is faster than the one after it.
- Substitute the answer back into the original problem.
- Check the sign, the size, and the units.
- Graph it or estimate it, and see whether it lands where you expected.
- Solve it a second way and compare.
Find the first step that went wrong
When an answer looks wrong, do not start editing your last line. Go back to the original problem and work forwards. Check the transcription, the brackets, the angle mode, the units, the domain, the graph window, and the rounding, in that order. Then find the first step that differs from what you expected. It is almost always earlier than where you noticed. That first difference is also the single most useful thing to quote if you end up emailing us, because it turns a vague report into a reproducible one.
Questions people ask about this page
Do I need an account to use the calculators?
No. Every calculator and tool runs in your browser with no sign-in at all, and your work is saved in your own browser rather than on our servers. Only the AI tutor asks you to sign in with Google, because each answer it produces costs money to generate.
Why did the tutor misread my handwriting?
Reading handwriting from a photo is the least reliable part of the whole process, and it fails in predictable ways: 5 and S, 1 and 7, a small exponent, or a label on a diagram. Always read the transcription back before you read the answer, and type out anything important that the picture might have blurred.
The answer is different from my textbook. Who is right?
Check three things before deciding. First, whether the two answers are the same value written differently, such as a fraction against a decimal or a rationalised denominator. Second, whether a rounding instruction was applied. Third, whether a domain restriction ruled out one solution. If they still disagree, substitute both into the original equation; only one will fit.
Can I save my work?
Yes, in your own browser. Graphs, notebook pages, and practice progress are stored in your browser's local storage, so they are still there when you come back on the same device and browser. Clearing your browser data deletes them permanently, and we cannot recover them, because we never had a copy.
