The formula this page uses
a/b in lowest terms = (a ÷ g) / (b ÷ g), where g = GCF(a, b). It is finished when GCF(top, bottom) = 1.

Simplify 84/126
Check whether any prime divides both numbers. In practice you only have to try 2, 3, 5, 7, 11 and 13 for the fractions in school work. If none of them divides both, the fraction is in lowest terms and you can stop looking.
Both even means 2 works. Both digit-sums being multiples of 3 means 3 works. Both ending in 0 or 5 means 5 works. After that, try 7, 11 and 13 by dividing directly, since there is no shortcut worth memorising for them.
Most markers expect it, and it makes answers easier to compare, since 2/3 and 84/126 look nothing alike until one is reduced. The exception is when the question sets a fixed bottom number, such as asking for the answer in twelfths.
Multiply the top and the bottom by the same power of ten until both are whole numbers. Here multiplying by 10 gives 6/8, which reduces to 3/4. It is the same value all along, since multiplying both parts by 10 is multiplying by 1.
