Why rectangle area and perimeter works

Area counts unit squares, and a rectangle holds a whole number of rows each containing the same number of squares, so the two side lengths multiply. Perimeter is a walk around the outside, and since opposite sides are equal you cover each length twice and each width twice.

When it stops applying

Both statements assume the four corners are right angles. Push the rectangle over into a leaning parallelogram and the perimeter is unchanged while the area shrinks, so length times width stops measuring the space inside.

For $l=8,w=3$, $A=24$ and $P=22$.

The mistake to avoid

What people do: Handing back the perimeter when the question wanted the area, or the reverse.

Why it goes wrong: The two answer different questions and even carry different units: fencing an 8 by 3 yard needs 22 units of fence but covering it needs 24 square units of turf.

Do this instead: Ask whether the answer covers a surface, which needs square units, or traces a boundary, which needs plain length units.

The square. With 24 units of fencing, a 6 by 6 square encloses 36 square units, more than any other rectangle with that same perimeter.

Yes. A square is a rectangle whose two dimensions happen to match, so its area becomes the side multiplied by itself.

How do I find the width from the area and the length?
