Why standard form of a line works
Keeping both variables on the same side means neither one has to be solved for, so nothing breaks when a coefficient is zero. Setting B to zero leaves Ax = C, a vertical line, which the slope-based forms cannot express. It is also the shape every equation takes inside a system.

$A,B,C$ are constants and $A,B$ are not both zero.
Standard form of a line: when it holds
For integer standard form, clear fractions and usually choose $A\ge0$.
When it stops applying
If A and B are both zero the equation is not a line. It collapses to 0 = C, which is false for every point when C is nonzero and true for every point when C is zero. That is why the definition insists at least one coefficient survives.
Standard form of a line: a worked example
$y=2x+3$ becomes $2x-y=-3$.
The mistake to avoid
What people do: Calling 0.5x + y = 3 finished when the question asked for integer standard form.
Why it goes wrong: Standard form is normally required with whole-number coefficients, and a decimal or fraction coefficient is not one. The line is right but the presentation is not what was asked for.
Do this instead: Multiply every term by whatever clears the fractions. Doubling 0.5x + y = 3 gives x + 2y = 6, which describes the same set of points with integers.

- Name the unknown, and the unit the answer has to come out in.
- Match the symbols to your values. $A,B,C$ are constants and $A,B$ are not both zero.
- Check the conditions before substituting. For integer standard form, clear fractions and usually choose $A\ge0$.
- Substitute, keep exact values to the last line, then test the sign, size, and unit against a rough estimate — the check that catches most algebra slips.

Questions about standard form of a line
How do I read the slope off Ax + By = C?
Solve for y or use the shortcut -A/B whenever B is not zero. For 2x - y = -3 that gives -2 divided by -1, which is 2, matching y = 2x + 3.
What is the fastest way to find both intercepts from this form?
Cover up one variable at a time. Setting y = 0 gives x = C/A, and setting x = 0 gives y = C/B, so two quick divisions place both points for graphing.
Is 3x + 6y = 12 the same line as x + 2y = 4?
Yes. Every term of the first was tripled, and scaling an entire equation never changes which points satisfy it. Standard form is not unique, so equations can look different and still be identical lines.
Why do teachers ask for A to be positive?
Only for consistency in grading, since multiplying through by -1 gives an equally correct equation. Fixing a convention means two correct answers look the same instead of differing by a sign.
