Improper Fraction to Mixed Number Calculator explained

The short version

  • Divide the top by the bottom. The answer is the whole part and the remainder goes back on top.
  • 43/6 is 7 and 1/6, because 6 goes into 43 seven times with 1 left over.
  • Check the leftover fraction afterwards, because it sometimes still needs reducing.

The formula this page uses

a/b = (a ÷ b as a whole number) and (remainder)/b

What each part means

SymbolWhat it means
a — The top numberBigger than the bottom, which is what makes the fraction improper.
b — The bottom numberIt stays exactly the same in the fraction part of the answer.
quotient — The whole partHow many complete wholes fit inside. It goes in front of the fraction.
remainder — What is left overAlways smaller than b. A remainder of 0 means there is no fraction part at all.

Show your work: a full example

  1. Convert 43/643 ÷ 6
  2. Find the biggest multiple of 6 that fits6 × 7 = 42
  3. That gives the whole part7
  4. Subtract to find the remainder43 − 42 = 1
  5. Put the remainder back over 643/6 = 7 and 1/6
  6. Check by multiplying back7 × 6 + 1 = 43

A second, different case

  1. A different case: the fraction part still reduces30/8
  2. Divide8 × 3 = 24, so the whole part is 3 and the remainder is 30 − 24 = 6
  3. First answer30/8 = 3 and 6/8
  4. But 6 and 8 both divide by 26 ÷ 2 = 3 and 8 ÷ 2 = 4
  5. Final answer3 and 3/4, which matches 30 ÷ 8 = 3.75
  6. Now one with nothing left over24/8: 8 × 3 = 24, remainder 0
  7. Read it24/8 = 3 exactly, with no fraction part written at all

Three mistakes to check for

What students writeWhy it's wrongDo this instead
43/6 = 6 and 1/43The whole part and the bottom number swapped places. The division answer 7 is the whole part and 6 stays on the bottom: 7 and 1/6.
30/8 = 3 and 6/8, finishedThe fraction part still reduces, so the answer is not in its simplest form.Divide 6 and 8 by 2 to get 3 and 3/4.
24/8 = 2 and 8/8A remainder of 0 means nothing is left over, so there should be no fraction part.24 ÷ 8 = 3 exactly, so the answer is just 3.

Questions about the Improper Fraction to Mixed Number Calculator

When should I leave a fraction improper instead?

During the working. Multiplying, dividing and solving equations are all easier with a single fraction, so 43/6 beats 7 and 1/6 in the middle of a calculation. Convert to a mixed number at the very end, when someone has to picture how big the answer is.

How do I handle a negative improper fraction?

Convert the size first and put the sign back last. For −29/8, work out 29 ÷ 8 = 3 remainder 5, giving 3 and 5/8, so the answer is −3 and 5/8. Writing −3 + 5/8 by mistake would give a different number.

What if the top is smaller than the bottom?

Then it is not improper and there is nothing to do. 5/8 has a whole part of 0, so writing 0 and 5/8 would just add clutter. Leave it as 5/8.

Does 7 and 1/6 mean 7 times 1/6?

No, it means 7 plus 1/6, which is about 7.17. Seven times 1/6 would be 7/6, or about 1.17, which is nowhere near. This clash is why mixed numbers disappear once algebra starts using letters next to numbers for multiplication.
