AP Statistics formulas and reference relationships

A useful sheet records meaning and conditions, not isolated symbols. Rebuild it from a blank page until every line comes back with its conditions attached.

Standard score

\[z=\frac{x-\mu}{\sigma}\]

What it tells you: Expresses a value in population standard-deviation units from the mean.

Use it when: $\sigma>0$ and the context must justify the distribution model used afterward.

Example: $x=85,\mu=70,\sigma=10$ gives $z=1.5$.

One-proportion confidence interval

\[\hat p\pm z^*\sqrt{\frac{\hat p(1-\hat p)}n}\]

What it tells you: Estimates a population proportion with a long-run confidence procedure.

Use it when: Check randomization or representative sampling, independence, and large expected success and failure counts.

Example: With $\hat p=.60,n=400$, the standard error is about $.0245$.

One-sample t statistic

\[t=\frac{\bar x-\mu_0}{s/\sqrt n}\]

What it tells you: Compares a sample mean with a null population mean when population spread is unknown.

Use it when: Observations should be independent and the sampling distribution sufficiently regular.

Example: $\bar x=52,\mu_0=50,s=8,n=16$ gives $t=1$.

Regression line

\[\hat y=b_0+b_1x,\quad e=y-\hat y\]

What it tells you: Predicts a response and defines each vertical residual.

Use it when: A linear model should fit the scatterplot and residuals; extrapolation needs justification.

Example: If $\hat y=4+2x$ and $x=3$, the prediction is $10$.

How long is the AP Statistics exam?

Multiple choice: 1 hour 30 minutes, 42 questions. Free response: 1 hour 30 minutes, 4 questions. Multiple choice — About 2.1 minutes each. Reading the scenario is most of the work; the arithmetic is usually small. Free response — About 22 minutes per question. These are long, multi-part scenarios - read all parts before writing part (a).

Which AP Statistics unit is weighted most heavily?

One-Variable Data and Collecting Data (20–30%) carries the largest published weighting. Use the weighting to order your review, not to skip a prerequisite that a heavier unit depends on.

Is a formula sheet given on the AP Statistics exam?

Yes. The AP Statistics exam gives you the formula sheet and tables. Formulas and the normal, t, and chi-square tables are given. Do not spend study time memorising them - spend it on when each applies.
