Use it when: Assumes a large randomly mating population without selection, migration, mutation, or drift.
Example: If $q=.2$, the expected heterozygote frequency is $2(.8)(.2)=.32$.
What it tells you: Predicts net water movement using solute and pressure potential.
Use it when: Use absolute temperature and compatible pressure units; pure water at standard pressure has $\Psi=0$.
Example: Water moves from higher water potential toward lower water potential.
What it tells you: Compares observed categorical counts with counts expected by a model.
Use it when: Expected counts should be sufficiently large and degrees of freedom must match the categories and estimated parameters.
Example: Observed Mendelian counts can be tested against a $3:1$ expectation.
What it tells you: Balances births, deaths, immigration, and emigration over time.
Use it when: Every term must refer to the same population and time interval.
Example: If births plus immigration exceed deaths plus emigration, population size increases.
