AP Biology formulas and reference relationships

A useful sheet records meaning and conditions, not isolated symbols. Rebuild it from a blank page until every line comes back with its conditions attached.

Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium

\[p+q=1,\qquad p^2+2pq+q^2=1\]

What it tells you: Connects two allele frequencies to expected genotype frequencies.

Use it when: Assumes a large randomly mating population without selection, migration, mutation, or drift.

Example: If $q=.2$, the expected heterozygote frequency is $2(.8)(.2)=.32$.

Water potential

\[\Psi=\Psi_s+\Psi_p,\qquad \Psi_s=-iCRT\]

What it tells you: Predicts net water movement using solute and pressure potential.

Use it when: Use absolute temperature and compatible pressure units; pure water at standard pressure has $\Psi=0$.

Example: Water moves from higher water potential toward lower water potential.

Chi-square statistic

\[\chi^2=\sum\frac{(O-E)^2}{E}\]

What it tells you: Compares observed categorical counts with counts expected by a model.

Use it when: Expected counts should be sufficiently large and degrees of freedom must match the categories and estimated parameters.

Example: Observed Mendelian counts can be tested against a $3:1$ expectation.

Population growth rate

\[\frac{\Delta N}{\Delta t}=B-D+I-E\]

What it tells you: Balances births, deaths, immigration, and emigration over time.

Use it when: Every term must refer to the same population and time interval.

Example: If births plus immigration exceed deaths plus emigration, population size increases.

How long is the AP Biology exam?

Multiple choice: 1 hour 30 minutes, 60 questions. Free response: 1 hour 30 minutes, 6 questions. Multiple choice — About 1.5 minutes each. Many items sit under a data set or a graph, so read the axes before the question. Free response — About 15 minutes each, but they are not equal - the long data-analysis questions deserve more than the short ones.

Which AP Biology unit is weighted most heavily?

Natural Selection (13–20%) carries the largest published weighting. Use the weighting to order your review, not to skip a prerequisite that a heavier unit depends on.

Is a formula sheet given on the AP Biology exam?
