Percent change

What it tells you: Compares environmental change with its original baseline.

Use it when: The original value must be nonzero and both values must represent the same measure.

Example: A rise from $40$ to $50$ is a $25\%$ increase.

Rule of 70

\[\text{doubling time}\approx\frac{70}{\text{annual growth rate in percent}}\]

What it tells you: Estimates doubling time under steady exponential percentage growth.

Use it when: The rate should be positive, reasonably small, and approximately constant.

Example: At $2\%$ annual growth, doubling takes about $35$ years.

Population density

\[D=\frac{N}{A}\]

What it tells you: Measures individuals per unit area.

Use it when: Population count and area must refer to the same place and observation time.

Example: $500$ organisms across $25\,\mathrm{km}^2$ gives $20$ per square kilometer.

Energy-transfer efficiency

\[\%\text{ efficiency}=\frac{\text{useful output}}{\text{input}}\times100\%\]

What it tells you: Tracks energy retained across a device or trophic transfer.

Use it when: Input and output must use identical energy units and the system boundary must be stated.

Example: $80$ J retained from $1000$ J input is $8\%$ efficient.
